Q&A with Governor Ige: Innovation, Education, Sustainability

Last week the Impact Hub HNL community was thrilled to host Hawaii Governor David Ige for a town-hall session focused on key topics that affect our community.

There were about 50 attendees, which included Hub members and community members, and the crowd was able to ask insightful questions of the Governor.

Some of the key points and questions covered during the event included:

  • Hawaii has been a leader in sustainability not just in the US but globally, with the Sustainable Hawaii Initiative.
  • Transforming Hawaii into a clean energy economy with 100% renewable energy can transform our economy.
  • Open data can advance sustainability here in the islands by partnering organizations like Hawaii Green Growth
  • How is the state is handling the impending sea level rise?
  • Hazard mitigation plan: How is the State is planning for natural disasters?
Attendees included Hub members and community members, and the crowd was able to ask insightful questions of the Governor.

As a non-partisan organization, Impact Hub HNL has invited all gubernatorial candidates to host town-hall events with an identical format at Impact Hub HNL. Future scheduled events will be on Facebook Live as well.

ImpactART: Last Known Locations with Lauren Hana Chai

On April 26, 2018, Impact Hub HNL hosted the first ImpactART event featuring mixed-media artist Lauren Hana Chai. This event was hosted in partnership with Honolulu Biennial Foundation.

Last Known Locations was inspired by the true story of Chai’s mother, who went missing when Chai was only 11 years old. Chai, now 27, has created a collection of vibrant paintings and drawings in a variety of sizes, including a mural, here at Impact Hub HNL.

Many of the pieces reflect Chai’s healing process as she worked through emotions of losing her mother. Other works are focused on North Korea. Says Chai, “As a Korean American, I’m largely inspired by Korean folk art and history as well as the clash of East and West, old and new. I am super grateful to be the first ImpactART featured artist and beyond excited to see the continued development of Impact Hub bringing together community and many more art shows to come!”

Last Known Locations offered an interactive art experience for guests, encouraging connection among the attendees. Upon arrival, each attendee was given half of a notecard with an image and a story; each image had a match in the crowd, and when put together, told the story of various pieces in the show.

All of the pieces from the show are on display and for sale at Impact Hub until May 26. Hours are Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm. To view the exhibit, check in with our Host at the front desk.

What is ImpactART?

ImpactART supports Hawaii’s artists by creating an equal exchange of artwork for studio and exhibition space. Co-created by Impact Hub HNL and Honolulu Biennial Foundation in 2017 to address the need for art studios and the proper valuation of artists’ work, ImpactART will trade space, materials and a gallery show within the Impact Hub for artwork.

Anne Weber, Impact Hub HNL Community Manager, explains, “The idea for ImpactART was inspired by our commitment to creating community impact. When we opened in August 2017, we had huge blank walls and wanted to figure out a way to beautify the space, support local up and coming artists, inspire a new audience of art lovers, and show the business community how they too can support local arts in a creative way. It is a win-win.”

What is the Honolulu Biennial Foundation?

The Honolulu Biennial Foundation (HBF) supports the local arts infrastructure with a global outreach by presenting the Honolulu Biennial event. The launch of Honolulu Biennial marks Hawaii’s first entry into the international biennial circuit. Honolulu Biennial will focus on art from the Pacific, the Asian continent, and the Americas.

Throughout the year, HBF serves the local community by presenting educational outreach programs, in addition to its between biennial festival programming initiative, Visions of the Future.

Wellness Wednesday: Learn to Brew Your Own Kombucha

In February we hosted our first Wellness Wednesday event with Diana Dymarsky of Awakened Mana, a local organization that focuses on conscious, sustainable events. In addition to running her events company and a grocery delivery service, Diana is also a kombucha expert, and she shared her funky ferment skills with almost 20 eager students.

Kombucha is a fermented tea drink that has been sipped for centuries around the world, and in the past decade has become increasingly popular for health-conscious consumers here in the US. Kombucha (or booch) is tangy, fizzy, and flavored in hundreds of ways to please a wide range of palates. Diana says that she fell in love with kombucha over four years ago, and it’s become daily staple for her. “I love all of the health benefits of Kombucha, but mostly my ability to swap out my coffee habit for ‘booch,” she says.

While the recipe is quite simple, the magic of fermentation makes the drink extraordinary (and offers a bunch of great health benefits, too). Kombucha is made by brewing black tea and sugar together, then adding a bit of premade kombucha to a large jar with a SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts). During the two week fermentation period, the SCOBY digests the sugars in the mixture, resulting is carbonation, and changing the flavor considerably. Kombucha can then be flavored with fresh or dried fruits, spices, and other ingredients to personalize your ‘booch. Diana’s favorites are Mango/Ginger, Blueberry/Ginger and Peach/Ginger! Yummy!

Awakened Mana offered organic kombucha starter kits at the event that consisted of everything you need to start your own brew:

  • 1 Gallon glass jar with lid
  • 1 SCOBY
  • 2 Cups starter liquid (premade kombucha)
  • 1 Cup organic sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons organic English breakfast tea

This class was very popular, so we hope to be offering it again soon! Diana said after class, “Teaching my first workshop at Impact Hub was such an honor. Wellness Wednesdays: Powering Up Your Productivity with Wildkraft

Many of us deal with mid-morning slumps or afternoon crashes. Why do we experience energy crashes of this sort, and how can we improve our productivity throughout the day?

In March we hosted another Wellness Wednesday event called Power Up your Productivity, to help our coworkers and community be their most productive selves. The workshop was taught by Blair Townley, a Western Clinical Herbalist and owner of Wildkraft Apothecary & Clinic, based at Impact Hub HNL.

Blair talked about four areas of optimization in our lives that can help combat the sleepiness, blood sugar crashes, and energy dips: food, sleep, movement, and environment.  She chose this topic because of client needs: “One of the things I see often in clients is need for better focus and clarity, and it’s important to make the connection between diet and lifestyle and our overall energy.”

Her first food tip is to avoid blood sugar spikes by maintaining a healthy diet that reduces simple carbs (like white rice and bread) and instead focuses on fiber-rich vegetables, healthy protein, and healthy fats, which digest slowly for more consistent energy. Blair has lots more tips for healthy blood sugar balancing on her website.

The second main way to keep your productivity high is to ensure you get a good amount of sleep each night. Lack of sleep, even for one night, can lead to impeded memory, reduced multitasking ability, slower creative thinking (thinking outside the box), and can lead to feelings of depression.

To ensure you get enough sleep, blackout your room at night (ie: avoid streetlights, gadget lights, and television), avoiding caffeine after noon (or entirely… scary, I know!), and turning off computers and phones an hour (or more!) before bed.

Other tips for better productivity include getting more movement (if you work here it’s just a five minute walk to the beach), and keeping a clean, organized workspace, which can help your brain feel more free.
