Member Spotlight: Curt Wilken and Karl Smith of CityWide Home Loans

November 6, 2018

This month’s Member Spotlight is the two owners of CityWide Homeloans, Karl Smith and Curtis Wilken. CityWide is a residential mortgage bank.  In their Hawaii office Karl and Curt focus heavily on construction loans and VA (veteran’s loans) – both of which there is a large need for here in the islands.

Their successful business relationship was actually forged many years ago – the two met with they were kids growing up in Ogden, Utah. They have been friends since 7th grade and remained friends through their college years at Weber State, also in Utah.  It wasn’t until Curt retired from the AirForce, last year, that he was finally able to convince his friend Karl to come visit, and their company grew from there.

CityWide is already one of the largest lenders in the Western states. Regarding their loan services in Hawaii, Karl notes that Hawaii banks tend to be a little more conservative with their lending criteria, and CityWide was able to step in and offer loans for a wide range of projects.  They offer homeowners the opportunity to rebuild old homes, expand their home’s footprint, or do refurbishments and improvements.

The CityWide team was one of our very first members here at Impact Hub, and their time here has proven successful  – they’ve expanded their business and added three new members to their team. When Impact Hub HNL was featured on Hawaii Public Radio recently, Karl was quoted as saying, “We can grow within the space and it’s just a really neat atmosphere.”

If you want to learn more about lending and construction loans, you can listen to Karl and Curt on the Fix it Friday show from 8am-9am weekly with Mike Buck on AM 690. They are also hosting an upcoming Lunch & Learn at Impact Hub HNL, 7 Nov at noon, with Amber Lethem about improving your sales growth. You can register for this FREE event by emailing Curt directly.

Event follow-up: Get Engaged! Social Justice Volunteerism Night

September 11, 2018

On Tuesday, 8/21, we hosted our first Get Engaged! community event. The purpose was to build community awareness around local social justice issues and increase volunteerism for six participating organizations.

Despite the threat of Hurricane Lane, over 60 people gathered together over pupu to hear about these organizations’ accomplishments, learn how to get involved, and network with others passionate or curious about social justice.

After the quick presentations, guests participated in a World Cafe designed by the participating organizations to brainstorm the motivators people have to stay in a movement, get engaged in a movement, and take action for a movement. After three rounds of questions, that got gradually deeper, guests were invited to stay and harvest the rounds from each table.

These posters are the result of the harvest from the World Cafe. They started with the question: What makes you stay in a movement? The rounds progressed to reasons for staying or leaving in times they have been engaged or disengaged, and finally addressed actions that could be taken to engage larger audiences in social justice work in a way that inspires action, solutions, and accountability.

The evening also inspired the Impact Hub team to do even more events to engage the community in local issues. Subscribe to our newsletter at the bottom of our website to learn about future Get Engaged! topics and events or to partner with us.

Join us 8/18 from 12-3pm for a free community art project. RSVP for free here.

Trash into Treasure is a collaboration between Pena People and Impact Hub HNL to create public art from marine debris found on the Trash To Treasure Beach Clean-up on August 11th from 8-11am at 2 convenient locations in Kailua and Diamond Head.

Join Pena People’s 1st art public art event featuring live music by Kelandy, pupus provided by GRYLT, local vendors and an art creation station where the public is invited to help us create art using marine debris!
Pena People’s mission is to make art more accessible to the public. Anyone can not only make art but also do some good for the environment at the same time. Raising money through selling our original t-shirts, we are able to fund this event and create recycled public art installations using marine debris from beach clean ups.
